The Hawaiian Luau: Dancing

This libguide is about the Hawiian Luau, which includes many aspects of what makes a Luau a celebration for all. This is directed towards my classmates to educate them on the Luau, because we will all be attending one on our trip to Hawaii.

Hula Dancing

Hula dancing is considered the centerpiece of Luau. The traditional dance tells a story through their movements, music, and chants. Hulas will tell a story of the Hawaiian Islands and Pacific voyagers who were on their way in search of a new home, sailing across the ocean. Dancers would honor gods and chiefs telling stories of weather patterns, stars, and the movement of lava and earth.

Hula and Fire Dancing

Fire Knife Dancing

Fire knife dancing is when tribal performers dance while twirling knives lit with fire. Much like hula, it is performed with rhythmic chants and songs, as well as fast-paced drumming and ancient instruments. Fire knife dancing is considered a war dance, hence the drums and intense music follwing the dance.
