Scottish Mythology: Creatures

The Mysterious Loch Ness Monster

A reclusive monster has been spotted for centuries living in the Loch Ness of the Scottish Highlands. That body of water contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. So it wouldn't be impossible for a monster to lurk beneath its surface. Whether or not the legends of the loch ness monster are true, this mythical beast has captured the imagination of the world and is one of Scotland's most famous legends.

The Deadly Kelpies

PA Media kelpies
Scottish Kelpies are shapeshifting water spirits. They can appear as a beautiful black horse with reversed hooves, or as a wrinkly old human with kelp in their hair. People who try to mount the horse find themselves unable to move, and the kelpie would drag them underwater where they would be eaten or drowned.

Scotland's National Animal

The national animal of Scotland is the legendary unicorn. Although this creature is found in legends throughout the world, Scotland has been using it as a national symbol since the twelfth century thanks to William I adding it to the Scottish Royal Arms. It is a symbol of purity, and power while connecting to Scotland's rich folklore.

The Unicorn Tapestries

undefined

A collection of seven tapestries believed to be made for King James V that described the history of the unicorn. Stirling Castle has its own recreation of this set, with the project to make them starting in 2001, and has finished production 14 years later. Historic Scotland commissioned the project to bring the tapestries back to their original home where they were seen by famous Scottish Royals like James V's daughter, Mary Queen of Scotts. The collection shows how Scotland's ties to the mythical creature are still strong centuries later.
